We aim to provide a service of support, advice, guidance and assistance to one-parent families under stress or in need, with the aim of providing the children in these families access to life-skills development experiences and opportunities for advancement that would not normally be available to them.
Our Services
Home-based and practical support

Our fieldworkers will visit families in their homes on a regular basis, help to identify issues the family wish to address, and support them with achieving the family’s goals.

We are are available to lend a friendly ear and assist with the resolution of issues.

We are often able to assist with household items that are donated to us such as linen, bedding and children’s clothing.

We will help you cut throught the red tape and lend a hand in sorting any stressful issues- so you can get used to and enjoy parenting alone.

Budget advice and advocacy:

We are affiliated to the New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services and can provide
budgeting assistance

We provide information and advocacy with agencies such as Work and Income New Zealand, Inland Revenue, Housing New Zealand, Courts, etc.

There is a comprehensive file on community services and groups in the office and we provide a referral service for specialized assistance.

Parenting Support: Meet others in a similar situation as yourself to gain support and a network of friends.

We provide parenting support to families and information from recognized programmes such as S.K.I.P and the Triple P programme.

Trips are organized for family outings to places such as Te Papa, the Zoo or Staglands.

We distribute free tickets to Magic Shows, Children’s Film Festivals and other events where tickets are donated to us.

We have a number of books available for reference on topics relevant to one-parent families as well as the Consumer magazines in the office. We receive copies of Littlies, Tots to Teens, Family Times and other parenting magazines that members are able to obtain from us.

We occasionally run workshops on relevant topics and can often provide additional services such as counselling.

Established in the Hutt Valley in 1965. We cover central Hutt Valley, Eastbourne, Petone, Wainuiomata, Stokes Valley and Upper Hutt areas. If you are parenting on your own with children under 18 years of age and live in the wider Hutt Valley area then you are eligible to become a Birthright Family member.
