What we do

Birthright works with single parent families throughout New Zealand to facilitate the growth of confidence, skills and resilience within the family unit and its individual members.


The particular services offered by Birthright in each region differs, but may include:

  • Counselling and social work
  • Recycled clothing and household goods
  • Workshops for parents on relevant subjects e.g. parenting skills, confidence building, goal setting, life skills and home management programmes
  • Budgeting assistance
  • Referrals to recognised agencies for specific problems e.g. grief, child abuse, behaviour problems
  • Ongoing support groups for parents
  • Self-esteem programmes for children
  • Financial support for schooling and holiday camps
  • Tertiary scholarships for children
  • Retraining grants for single parents.
 
Birthright assists families by helping the family members to plan for their own development, to effectively use their own and community resources and to achieve integration in the community.  Specific services and practical assistance are offered to the family or its members in the context of their personal aspirations and goals, at a time and in a form relevant to them.
